You Pay Too Much For Your Pets Medicine

Having recently been spammed in the comments section from an employee of 1800petsmeds (or at least it very much seems that way) I thought it an opportune moment to wrap up the mini-series on pets medicine. You can read the comment here if you are interested. I removed the links though as, and you will read about this in a moment, I won’t promote stupidly priced products if I can help it.

I have now spent a few months involved in the cut-throat world of online pet meds. I know I have not been writing here as often as I used to but in an effort to be able to afford more raw meaty bones for the ever growing three bone munchers I have been branching out in to the world of what is known as “niche blogging”. Now the finances have settled down somewhat you can expect a somewhat more regular appearance from me. Hooray, I hear you all cry!

Anyway, my efforts have mainly been centred around the world of Dogs (of course) and Dog meds, and it is a pretty scary place in the world of pets medicines. Yesterday, for example, I provided a pet med site with gross takings of over $1500 and I get a percentage of that. What I will not do, however is promote things that are not a good deal for people. That number could easily have been up to 50% higher, which of course would have given me 50% more money, but that is not the way I like to treat people and is not how I would wish to be treated.

If I promote something I like to do my research and find the best prices for people. Heck, I want the lowest prices and the best service and I expect everyone else does as well. People can be very trusting, and I have now learnt from experience that when you say something, or recommend something, people often believe you and will make a purchase from your recommendation. To fool people in to buying an item they could have got cheaper is simply not in their best interests and not at all helpful.

My very ugly free blogger blog where you can buy frontline has been a life saver as far as paying the bills is concerned and a simple buy frontline page from another free site has helped keep the Dogs hunger pangs at bay. What they have in common is that if you read them or make a purchase they will be from the lowest price for frontline medicine that I could find. I win, the person who makes the purchase wins, and everyone is happy.

This is not always the case though. There are literally tens if not hundreds of thousands of people all trying to make websites to promote Dogs pets medicines such as heartworm treatments. Some are successful like my ugly cheap frontline site (by the way, please read the post that I linked to, it shows how I do my research and that my efforts are genuine) and others are VERY successful. People find them via search engines and are often very trusting about what they read. This brings me to the point of this post.

Stop Being So Trusting And Pay Less For Your Pets Medicine

There is one thing I have realised over the past few months and that is that many people are very trusting. They find you via a search engine (hello you) and will often believe what you say, thinking you have their best interests at heart. This is often not the case. The pets medicine business is a multi-billion dollar industry and the online stores make an absolute fortune. Type in anything related to a brand of pet medicine or just some pet medicine related words and you will see the same few stores time and time again. They have countless people also writing blogs promoting them for a commission.

Are they the cheapest? No. Why do they do so well then? Because they are the only sites people find. This is kind of a viscous circle that perpetuates itself.

There is one simple way to save an absolute fortune when it comes to purchasing your pet meds.

Trust no one and do your own research.

This is the best piece of advice you will probably ever get for online shopping. Don’t believe me, don’t believe them, believe yourself.

Do price comparisons.

At the very least pick a handful of stores and compare the prices. Of course, my choice of where to buy pet meds has some of the best prices, but it is Canadian and may put some people off. Personally I don’t care where I make a purchase if it is the best price, but some people like to buy from their own country. Wherever you buy from make sure that you compare prices.

I have lost count over the last few months of how many times I have seen a sign on a site saying “we have the lowest prices, guaranteed”. Of course it is total bull in most cases and a simple price comparison would reveal the truth. Pick a handful of sites and compare the prices. You may be surprised at how much you can save. If you read posts like the heartworm medicine price comparison post you can see what you can save by a simple price comparison.

Don’t Rule Out Buying From Abroad

You can save considerable money by purchasing from abroad. I don’t mean dubious sites selling counterfeit Asian meds, I mean legitimate overseas or neighbouring countries. If you live in the UK or the US then quite often you can save money buy purchasing from Canada or even Australia. Even after you factor in the shipping.

You should check it out and see how prices compare.

Rant Over

Well, this has been a kind of a rant. Of course all of the above only applies if times are hard or you are concerned about saving money. I always am, but then I have always been slightly frugal. If you only take one thing from this post it is not to always believe what you read.

I mean, is my recommendation really the cheapest source for pet meds or am I lying because I know most people don’t do price comparisons? There is only one way to find out isn’t there…………….

  • Just wanted to say that I was hit by the spammer and I have a blog! Anyways, it is a great article. There is a good chance that there is a lot of pet owners that are unaware of their options for pet medication.

    Good Job!

    Hi Chris,

They must be paying someone to go around leaving dodgy comments for the 1800petmeds site. It was an Indian IP address so I am guessing they are paying someone a low wage to try to improve their search engine results by spamming peoples sites. Very odd.

Glad you enjoyed the article and thanks for the kind comment.

  • yeah, so many people just blindly accept the bill they are given, or the first price they see. I do it too. part of it is laziness. You’re right, the best thing to do is do some research, compare prices and trust no one but yourself!

    Hi Lindsay,

It’s true, sometimes we simply don’t think to question prices for pet meds. So many online stores make an absolute fortune because they know people won’t check the prices.

  • Great article! I think that everyone has the right to compare and shop around for the best prices. One of my biggest concerns is when I hear stories of vets that blatantly slander all online pet meds stores as counterfeit goods. Of course, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out why.

    Jack,

I agree. Have you seen the mark up of many Vets. A minimum of 100% in nearly all cases for pets medicines.

  • You are so very right about some dog med sites taking us all for rides. I did find a way to cut my cost to a minimum on my smaller dogs flea treatments. It doesn[t work for large dogs. But no one ever tells us we can do this and it is so easy. They don’t want us to save money I guess. I found out how to do this from a friend and a local feed and animal store. Where you can buy puppy shots and adult dog shots except for rabbies. I bought the flea med there as well. Lets just say I wound up with a 21 month supply instead of a 3 month supply of flea treatments. I am really trying to keep a heads up on good deals all around now. It works safely on my dogs. I am sure the writer of this site can figure out what I did. I just don’t know if I should reccomend it to others. And I found on this site a link that sells my flea med cheaper than I can buy in the store. Ohh the wonderful savings. Happy dog camper.
