Glenbob, I seriously doubt it or all my Dogs would be dead. We have 200 Olive trees and the Dogs are annoyingly obsessed with eating the Olives. They are sick on ocassion because they ferment in their stomachs but that's about it. I hate them eating the Olives but it is imposssible to stop. Hope this helps.

My neighbor claims her dog ate unprocessed olives from a tree in my yard, and died from it. Is that possible?

As always, great post. I have to admit too that obedience training is soooo important. It seems that most dog owners wait until things are out of control before they think about some training. It is sad to know that the reason most dogs end up in shelters is because of the dog owner can't handle the behavior any longer. While it is possible to train an older dog it is just so much easier to start when they are puppies.

Hi Sara,

Exactly. Basic obedience is so important. It doesn't have to be a ton of tricks, just the basics which give your Dogs a more structured life.

My favorites: Lack of training and being too nice! People don't realize that dogs need structure. Just today I heard a story about a woman whose dog ended up dead because he got loose in a strange neighborhood and wound up dead because he was hit by a car. Teaching your dog basic obedience can save his/her life!

Emchi, I think that's great. It is all about making informed decisions. What a boring world it would be if we all thought the same thing!

I am glad you did your research and if the breeders recommended it for Goldens then who am I to argue. This topic really is a very mixed one with strong opinions on both sides.

The main thing is you looked in to it carefully.

All the best.

We went with the vet and our breeders advice that you should let them have their first season and then neuter, the percentage risk is still lower than if you don't do it at all.

We'd spoken to several breeders before going with the one we did, and they all said the same about neutering a female golden, wait until after the first season...

<abbr><em>emchi’s last blog post..<a href="http://emchi.co.uk/blog/index.php/2009/01/18/big-girls-blouse/">Big Girl’s Blouse</a></abbr></em>

Emchi, even that is debatable. I just looked on the Golden Retriever Forum and even there there is no consensus. Many feel it is worth the risk of incontinenece weighed against higher risks of cancer if you don't spay early, and the increased chances of unwanted puppies.

It really is a tough decisiion to make, especially in larger breeds. Personally I would go with spaying early unless I was super sure (which I was) that there was no chance of the Dog meeting any males.

I guess thisis a topic that will always be heavily debated.

I fully agree with everything you say except the spaying... best advice is speak to your vet as the spaying before the first season isn't applicable to some breeds. For example Golden Retrievers, you must spay females after their first season because they are liable to become incontinent. Basically they come into season at about 9 months, you then have to wait two months following the end... so around about 12 months old.
