Excuse me if I sound a little excited but Furminator where have you been all my life. I can’t believe it has taken me, what, 19 years of owning Dogs to finally actually get a Dog brush that works properly. The Furminator deshedding tool is frankly amazing. I can’t even begin to count how many different Dog brushes we have gone through over the years, way too many. Our first Dog Sam was a hairy beastie but never really seemed to shed too much fur.

But the three girls we now have are like some kind of Dog hair shedding maniacs, it amazes me that they actually have any fur left on them they seem too shed so much on to the floor. Anyway, before we take a proper look at the Furminator here they are to buy, and they really are about the best thing you could possibly get if you have a Dog that sheds a lot fur.

Click To Buy Or To Read Over 3000 Reviews

Looking on Amazon I was amazed to see over 3000 reviews for the Furminator. Does every Dog owner apart from me know how good it is? I have heard of it for years but never actually took any time to read Furminator reviews or to investigate just how they worked. I always assumed a Dog brush was a Dog brush and they were all pretty much similar in nature.

Well, the other day Mrs. Three Dog Blogger cam home with the Furminator. The house has been getting progressivley worse each day as the Dogs shed more fur for the warmer months. Every morning they usually get a brush but it still results in fur allover the floor tiles. Easy to sweep up but still horrendous.

Well, the Dogs had already had a brush with a traditional Dog brush but when the Furmitator was combed through each of the three girls I simply could not believe it. Handfuls, and I really do mean handfuls of fur came off. I had to actually stop and ask if she hadn’t bought a gizmo that was actually cutting their fur as I could not believe that a simple grooming tool would result in so much extra fur coming off the beasties. Nope, it is a simple deshedding tool for Dogs that gets really deep in to the fur and removes all the fur that would otherwise be all over the floors and the furniture.

I really cannot tell you just how impressed I am with this simple tool.

I really did not think that there was anything that would work better than the usual Dog brushes that many of us have been using for years. The difference is staggering and I would buy another one immediately if this one ever went missing. If you want to know how to get rid of Dog fur then the Furminator is without doubt the best thing I have ever found. Sometimes I wonder why I don’t investigate things I hear of straight away. I mean, it took me a year to buy a Dog backpack to stop Daisy running away, and I wish I had done that when I said I was going to.

Seriously, if you have problems with Dog fur and the Dogs shedding fur everywhere then the Furminator deshedding tool is the best thing you will ever buy. Sorry if I sound excited over a simple thing like this but a cleaner house is something I thought was never for the likes of this Dog blog owner.

Today we have a guest post from Reed. To be honest I never knew microfiber Dog towels existed, but they do sound interesting. Read on to see why they may be useful and for information on what exactly they are:

If you’re searching for a microfiber dog towel chances are you’re either looking to buy microfiber dog towels or you’re looking for a little bit more information about them to see if they’re right for you and your pooch. If you fall in to the second category, invariably the first question on your mind must be: “Why would anyone use a microfiber dog towel?”

To effectively answer that question lets first look at what most people use as a dog towel. What do you currently use? An old beach towel or blanket? Perhaps an old t-shirt or dish towel? Most people use something old and worn out for a dog towel as sort of an afterthought for drying their dogs off. Using a microfiber dog towel changes all that as you’ll see below.

Now all of the dogs I’ve owned hated to get dried off. My current best friend thinks it’s a game every time I go to dry his paws. He likes to bite me or the towel as I struggle to clean him up. And for the last 4 years I had been using an old towel that didn’t really do a great job so needless to say this was a chore neither of us looked forward to.

Then about 6 months ago I was given a microfiber dog towel as a gift. I thought it was a kind gesture and nothing more until spring rolled around and every time my dog came in I had to dry him off. I was amazed at what a difference it made. The towel is light and fluffy and looks more or less like a normal towel, but when it came to drying the dog it would soak up the water from his paws and fur incredibly fast. And thoroughly. My dog is an American Eskimo and has a lot of fur, so when he would get soaked, he would get SOAKED. The microfiber towel could handle all the water leaving Juneau a fluffy puff ball. Best of all he didn’t know what hit him. I could dry him faster and more thoroughly with the microfiber towel for dogs; avoiding the tug of war that eventually broke out.

Click here to buy from Amazon

Another benefit of the microfiber dog towel is how quickly it dries off. This is a unique property of microfiber; that water will evaporate from the towel quicker than regular towels. This is incredibly helpful on rainy days when your dog wants to go outside just long enough to get wet before coming back in again only to want to go back out 10 minutes later. My old, beat up towel would only be good for 2-3 cycles of dog drying before it would be thoroughly soaked. And I would never remember to get a new one so I would have to run to the closet to get a fresh old crappy towel while Juneau would escape all over the house. I don’t worry about any of this now.

As you can tell, I’m a big fan of microfiber dog towels. They absorb more water, they do it faster and more thoroughly than a regular towel (which is especially great for dogs with thick undercoats) and they dry off quickly. Now I only have one dog, but I can imagine that these are twice as useful if you have more dogs (like the owner of one of my favorite Dog Blogs perhaps?) as you will require fewer towels. In fact, microfiber towels for dogs are especially handy when traveling. If you take your dogs with you camping or to the beach, one large dog towel should be able to handle even three dogs and you can throw it over the back seat (or wherever they sit).

If you’d like to know more about microfiber dog towels, including how they work or where you can find the best price on microfiber dog towels you can check out my blog on microfiber towels.

Thanks to Reed for the article. I think something like this would have been perfect for us, especially when we lived in the UK and had a constantly wet Dog and beige carpets to deal with, not a good combination. Has anyone been converted? Or do you already use a microfiber Dog towel?

As part of the continuing pets medicine series here at the unProfessional Dog training online school I now want to take two part look at fleas and Dogs. In this first post we will learn a little about the flea, what it actually is and what effects it can have on our Dogs.

In the next post we will take a look at the myriad different ways there are to either treat or prevent the humble flea from causing misery to our beloved bone munchers.

What is a flea?

According to Wikipedia the

Flea is the common name for insects of the order Siphonaptera which are wingless insects whose mouthparts are adapted for piercing skin and sucking blood.

They are a parasite that lives by feeding off the blood of mammals and birds.

Gonna Get ‘Ya

As we are only concerned with the Dog flea here, or Ctenocephalides canis I won’t list the myriad other classifications or problems they can cause. We only need to know about fleas and Dogs here at the Doggie social club.

Fleas can jump up to seven inches vertically and thirteeen inches horizontally, which is approx 200 times their size. They are perfectly adapted for easily moving through the fur of our animals and have a tubelike mouth part perfectly adapted for sucking blood.

Their bodies are extremely hard so Dog scratching does little to harm them. If you have ever tried to kill one between your fingers (I haven’t) then aparently it is very difficult to do so.

Fleas lay tiny eggs and the larvae can feed on both blood and the droppings of adult fleas (gross).

How Dog Fleas Live And Why We Must EXTERMINATE

The lifecycle of the Dog flea, as with all fleas, is three staged. Larva, pupa, and adulthood.

[ad#ad-inpost]

Fleas cannot reproduce until after they have fed on blood. The female then lays up to 20 or so eggs which are a perfect shape for getting caught in the Dogs fur (where they are laid), but are also perfectly formed for hiding in crevices and bedding where are Dogs go for a little rest.

Two weeks later the fleas will have hatched but it can be only a matter of days. Blind but ready to feed they can eat any organic matter they find. After a few more weeks they will have passed through three larval stages and will build a coccon. Another few weeks and they can emerge as adult Dog fleas.

If the conditions are not right or the weather too cold they can stay dormant in their cocoon until the conditions are right. It can be vibrations, heat or carbon dioxide that triggers them to emerge as adults.

Once the adults emerge they need blood fast. This is all they feed on and must find it within a week.

As an aside is anyone else thinking VAMPIREZ?

If they find food they can then wait months before needing to feed again although if they have found a home on our Dogs this will be happening rather continuously.

The flea cycle can be from a few weeks from start to finish to quite a few months. Females can lay a very large quantity of eggs which means if they have the right conditions, you know, nice warm bedding, central heating, all the things lots of us (well, not me) have.

How Fleas Effect Our Dogs

Fleas on Dogs effect them in much the same way they do any of their hosts. When they feed on our Dogs blood they make a small puncture wound which usually goes red around it. Usually it is small clusters that happen as the fleas feed repeatedly.

For some Dogs there is a very real allergic reaction to the saliva that comes into contact with the skin as they feed. Some Dogs suffer very strong allergic reactions and is why there are so many flea treatments for Dogs on the market.

Fleas can lead to hair loss from scratching but can also cause serious problems to the Dogs skin. Many Dogs get so distracted by the reaction they get that they will gnaw an area until it is red raw and the fur has gone. This is quite common and is known as flea allergy dermatitis. This gnawing and continual scratching will simply further compound the problem and quite often veterinary intervention is then required.

In the next post we will look at the many different ways we can combat fleas both on our Dogs and in the home. Out of all the many problems our Dogs face there are actually some very effective natural flea remedies that we can use. A lot of this series of pet medicines are based around using chemical ingredients that many of us are loathe to use unless we really need to. I will be looking at both the guaranteed chemical solutions and a more natural approach to getting rid of fleas on our Dogs.

May the Doggie Force be with you all,

Not so long ago we looked at how to remove a tick from a Dog and it seemed like a more thorough look at the subject of both tick and flea preventions and remedies was in order. Dog fleas and Dog Ticks are two of the most common infestations Dog owners face and learning how to prevent ticks and fleas is something a lot of Dog owners ask.

I will take a comprehensive look at both how to get rid of fleas and ticks on Dogs as well as how to prevent fleas and ticks on Dogs. Once your Dog has ticks or fleas then frontline medicine or something similar is your best way to treat themThis will be quite a long post (2500 words now I have finished) so for your convenience (and if you wish to skip a section) the post will be broken down in to the following chapters:

Hopefully this will cover the topic very comprehensively and should give all of us a good idea of exactly how to prevent ticks and fleas and how to get rid of ticks and fleas when our Dogs get them. Having done quite a bit of research for this I think some of the different methods will be seen as interesting alternatives to Frontline or similar products. I have certainly become intrigued by some of the interesting ways to kill Dog fleas and Dog ticks.

How To Prevent Ticks

For some Dog owners ticks are a real problem. I am one of them. Learning how to prevent ticks can drastically cut down on the number of Dog ticks you will have to deal with.

For some of us trying to prevent ticks is a bit of a challenge. The best way to prevent ticks without any medication is to stay away from areas that contain ticks. Ticks are most often found in long grass and woods. if walking your Dog in such places the ticks will attach to the Dog and quickly burrow its head in to the dogs skin. How to prevent ticks when you live in such an environment can be extremely difficult without some form of home tick treatment. Without using some form of tick treatment for Dogs, such as frontline medicine, preventing Dog ticks simply comes down to staying away from grassy and damp areas as much as possible.

How To Prevent Fleas

Natural flea prevention, without adding anything to your Dogs skin can be difficult. However one of the best ways to prevent fleas is the use of the vacuum cleaner. For every flea on your Dog there will be many more, in different stages, around the home. It may be time for a spring clean. Natural flea prevention without applying anything to the Dog or the surroundings will come down to keeping an area as flea free as possible by cleaning. Vacuum all areas extremely well and you will go a long way to cutting down on the number of fleas in the area and break the life cycle of the fleas. As with preventing ticks, it is difficult to beat the chemically based frontline medicine.

Natural Flea Prevention

Apart from keeping the surroundings clean there are a few good tips for natural flea prevention. Firstly we should ensure that we bathe the Dogs regularly. A good hot shower can work wonders to prevent the build up of ticks. After bathing a good brush to keep the Dog clean is in order. There are special flea combs that can be purchased to get rid of fleas on the Dog.

Also bear in mind that fleas will not survive in a very hot wash. Gather up all the Dogs bedding and run it through the washing machine on a hot wash. The same goes for anything else in the house that you feel may have been infested with fleas.

Searching around the internet there are quite a few recipes and directions for natural flea prevention. Preventing fleas on your Dog naturally is certainly worth a go. A lot of natural ways to prevent fleas rely on essential oils.

Lavender oils have been cited as quite effective in flea prevention. Add a few drops of lavender oil to 8 oz water and spray over the Dog. Some people have found it effective.

Eucalyptus Oils used in a similar manner can also be employed as a natural flea prevention. Also try a few drops on bedding etc or even some leaves.

Adding a third apple cider vinegar to two thirds water and poring all over the Dog after bathing has worked well for some. Just dry the Dog lightly and the smell will soon disappear.

A lemon, cut up and left in 8 oz of water for a day has seen good results when then sprayed on your Dog. Preventing fleas in Dogs has a lot of these type of solutions and a lot of the different essential oils mixed with water are said to be very effective.

Natural Tick Prevention

Apart from staying away from areas with ticks, which is not always possible, what other ways are there to naturally prevent ticks on Dogs. Well apart from learning how to remove Dog ticks there are a few natural ways to prevent ticks. Similar to natural flea prevention, lots of essential oils have been cited as being quite effective when it comes natural tick prevention. Oils such as lavender, lemongrass, eucalyptus, etc can be added to water and applied to the Dog. How effective these are as a natural Tick prevention I really don’t know but you wish to try them.

It is also important to remember to keep all Dog bedding washed regularly. Young ticks are minuscule and if you allow your Dog to sleep on the bed and you live in an area where ticks are prevalent I would check the bedding if I was you. Sorry!

There seem to be a lot of natural tick prevention solutions on the market, many simply containing the natural oils stated above. I don’t know if they work well but again you may give them a try. Natural tick prevention really comes down to avoidance. They are much tougher to prevent naturally than fleas. I eally have found little to support these treatments. Frontline medicine, or something like advantix, though chemical based, is definitely the most thorough and effective solution.

How To Get Rid Of Ticks And Fleas

We will now take a look at how to get rid of ticks and how to get rid of fleas.

Learning how to prevent ticks and how to prevent fleas really is best attempted to control by avoidance and keeping the house and bedding well cleaned. There really is little else that seems to really work if you want to avoid your Dog getting infestations. Essential oils may help but to be honest I have found little to know actual people who have said these natural remedies completely eradicate ticks and fleas.

[ad#ad-1]

How To Get Rid Of Ticks Naturally

Without resorting to any chemicals such as Frontline there are not many ways to get rid of Dog ticks. You will basically need to know how to remove Dog ticks by using a pair of tweezers. Pulling off the ticks is the best way to remove or get rid of ticks naturally. Forget trying petroleum or a just extinguished match to the tick to remove it. It simply does not work. How to get rid of ticks once they have them is by tick removal or the application of something like frontline tick medication.

To get rid of dog ticks you can try a little apple cider vinegar in their water. Just how effective this will be to get rid of ticks I am rather dubious about. The reality of Dog ticks is this. If you don’t use a chemical the best way to get rid of Dog ticks naturally is to avoid areas where they are are remove the tick from the Dog by pulling it out.

How To Get Rid Of Fleas Naturally

As stated in “how to prevent fleas”, you can get rid of fleas on Dogs using a god Dog shampoo and then brushing thoroughly with a flea comb for Dogs. Try to use a flea comb every day as part of the Dog grooming routine and it will help tremendously.

To use a flea comb you need a god supply of soapy water. Dip the flea comb in the water between each combing. This will kill the fleas in the water and make combing easier. Apart from the flea comb you can again try the natural oils mixed with water and applied to the Dog. However as with how to get rid of ticks naturally I have found little evidence that these will effectively get rid of fleas like the Frontline, Advantix type of remedies do.

To kill Dog fleas without the use of chemical is really down to vacuuming thoroughly, washing any related bedding and the regular use of a flea comb for Dogs.

Flea And Tick Medication

There are a number of flea medications and tick medications that will kill Dog fleas and kill Dog ticks. There are also flea collars and tick collars but these really are not as effective as spot on medications. Flea and tick collars maybe effective on small Dogs but will do little to protect the body of a large Dog.

There are a few bestsellers when it comes to flea and tick medication. Frontline plus may be the best well known but Advantix and X-spot are also very well regarded. I use X-spot as here in Spain it is cheaper and prevents leishmania which can be a killer here. In the UK we always used Frontline medicine and it works extremely well. Frontline flea medication is particularly effective and we have never had a problem with fleas if we applied Frontline regularly. Home flea treatments and home tick treatments should be used in conjunction with a commercial product unless you find one of the natural flea preventions and natural tick preventions really do work.

Frontline Flea And Tick Medication

Although I will talk about Frontline medicine, as it is the most widely used way to kill Dog fleas and kill Dog ticks the same applies to any of the major flea and tick preventions like Advantix and X-Spot. How does Frontline work? Frontline ticks treatment medication works by a process called translocation. Frontline flea and tick treatment gradually works its way in to the oil glands of the Dog and then spreads through the Dogs fur. Frontline medicine normally takes about 24 to 48 hours to kill all Dog ticks and Dog fleas after it is applied.

Discount Frontline is still an issue. These applications are expensive and although they work very effectively cheap Frontline for Dogs would still be nice.

How To Apply Frontline

The same technique applies to all spot on medications. Ensure you do not let your Dog get wet after applying Frontline flea or tick medication. It takes up to two days for them to work effectively so keep the Dog dry for a few days.

How To Apply Fronline Video

To apply Frontline medicine is a two step process. You need to apply Frontline to the Dogs neck and to its back. Always ensure that you get Frontline flea and tick medication that is suitable for the size of your Dog. How to apply Frontline is fairly simple. Many owners of Dogs with long fur seem to think there is a problem with it but you should still be able to apply Frontline fairly easily.

Frontline plus is best applied first between the shoulder blades of the Dog. Ensure you apply it where the Dog absolutely cannot lick it. Part the fur of your Dog right back to the skin and carefully squeeze half of the capsule directly on to the skin. Careful, it may be cold and the brave pooch may jump a little. You then need to apply Frontline flea or tick medication to the Dogs rear. Apply just above the hips, again assuring that it cannot get access to lick it. Low cost Frontline products should be purchased with caution. As I stated in my removing Dog ticks post, be wary if it is coming from Asia and you may find it is not a genuine product.

Flea and tick control is very important for many Dog owners, especially those living in areas where they are rife so by all means try some natural remedies but never forget how effective these products are. Home flea and tick treatments really don’t come much easier to use than this.

Natural Flea And Tick Prevention Or Frontline And Other Chemicals?

I have done quite a bit of research for this post and it has up to now taken four hours to write including some of the research. Although there are lots of natural flea prevention and natural tick prevention recipes and ideas online there is one thing they all seem to have in common. I found lots of ideas for the use of Oils, Lemons, vinegars etc but very little feedback from those who have used them. If you have effectively used a natural way to control Dog ticks and Dog fleas then please leave a comment stating what you used and how effective it was.

How to prevent fleas and how to prevent ticks naturally comes down to housework. Keeping areas well vacuumed and bedding washed seems to be the best natural way to prevent ticks and fleas in Dogs. Keeping the Dog well bathed can also help. The only natural way I found that has lots of feedback when it comes to killing or preventing either Dog ticks or Dog fleas is the use of a flea comb. This definitely works to get rid of fleas. If Dog ticks are not a problem then a regular comb with a Dog flea comb could definitely save you a lot of money. Cheap Frontline for Dogs does not seem to exist so a small spend on a flea comb is well worth the investment.

For those of us with a more serious case of Dog ticks and Dog fleas then Frontline flea and tick medication or in my case X-Spot seems to be the best solution. I do not like adding chemicals to my Dogs but in all the research I have done today I haven’t actually found any cases of it being classed as a serious risk to Dogs. I suppose it is similar to using chemicals to prevent the biting that happens to us here in Summer. I don’t like using the frontline medicine chemicals but they are very effective.

If you have any effective ways on how to prevent ticks or how to prevent fleas naturally or good home flea treatments that are cheap and effective then please leave a comment.

Hopefully you live in an area where Dog ticks and Dog fleas are not too prevalent and you will never need to kill Dog fleas and ticks on a regular basis.

Here in Spain, as the Weather warms, the Ticks are again beginning to become a real problem. All three of the Dogs have a Treatment against Ticks every month. There is one thing I have learnt over the years and that is that the best way to stop ticks and fleas is to use Frontline for Dogs. This stops them ever appearing but often we do not have it in the house or have not applied it as it is no the season when the ticks usually appear. Luckily I do know how to remove a Tick from a Dog easily.

If they are not treated every month though, they will have Ticks on them all year. It seems that if we miss the monthly deadline by even a few days then the Ticks start to attack the Dogs.

Ticks are horrible little insects that suck on the blood of their host and gradually swell up with blood. Very nasty to see when full, they are not much better when small.

Over many years I have heard a lot of conflicting advice about Tick removal. Removing Dog Ticks is not a nice thing to do but most Dog owners will have to do it at some point. Try not to be too squeamish about it and if you find Ticks on your Dog you need to remove them as quickly as possible. Removing Dog Ticks is simple and with this guide about how to remove a Tick from a Dog you should have no problems. I must admit I really do not like the Ticks at all but knowing how to remove Ticks from a Dog is just one of those things we as Dog owners need to know about.

How To Remove A Tick From A Dog

[ad#ad-inpost]

As mentioned earlier I have had so much conflicting advice on how to remove Ticks from your Dogs. The main thing to bear in mind when removing Ticks from the Dogs is that you do not want to crush or squeeze the Ticks body. This could push the harmful Bacteria in the Tick in to the Dogs body.

You need to remove the Tick intact and then get rid of it.

I had always been told to either put a just extinguished match to the Tick, or cover it in Petroleum Jelly. This is supposed to make the Tick react, let go and easily be pulled off. In reality this does nothing more than make the Tick react, maybe hold on tighter, and increase the risk of its nasty Saliva getting more in to the Dogs bloodstream.

You Need To Be a Ninja Tick Eliminator

Don your Ninja Tick Eliminating gear and get your Ninja Tweezers ready.

The best way to go about removing a Tick from a Dog is the most direct approach. Removing Ticks from Dogs is best done quickly and efficiently. A pair of Tweezers is the best tool for the job.
When you find a tick on the Dog, part the Fur around the Tick and grip the Tick with the Tweezers right where it has its head in the Dog. (I know, Gross!)

DO NOT grip it by its body. You may make the problem worse or end up removing the body without the Head.

With the Tick held right by the Head simply pull away from the Dogs body. It will come out fairly easily. It is a straightforward process and not difficult at all.

Just try not to look at the Tick too much. They are one ugly insect!

Removing Ticks From Dogs

Getting rid of ticks is a very quick thing as long as they are not infested. The best way to stop Ticks from reappearing is to use a product such as Frontlineor X-Spot. I have found X-Spot to work much better for us, because it is slightly cheaper than Frontline in Spain and has the added bonus of guarding against leishmania, which is a real problem in Spain. Tick control Collars seem all but useless on Medium to large sized Dogs.

Removing Ticks from Dogs Video.

Discount Frontline for Dogs?

Dog Ticks Treatment

I have never found a source of cheap or discounted Frontline or X-Spot. I wish I could tell you that I have. It is an expensive treatment to have to give every month. I have found it cheap on ebay. But it comes from places such as Malaysia and Thailand and to be honest I am simply a bit dubious about it. Dog Ticks Treatments are an expensive business each month.

The best and most reasonable prices for cheap Frontline for Dogs seem to be from Amazon but they don’t carry the treatment I need and it works out expensive if shipped from another country to Spain. If you have bought from such countries or have a way to obtain discount Frontline or similar treatments like X-Spot then I and many others would love to hear from you. Some people believe their dogs fur is to thick for frontline but you simply part the fur right down to the skin and apply the hopefully low cost Frontline.

Do you use a Dog Ticks Treatment?

Does it work?

Do you know of an alternative to Chemical Treatments? Is there low cost Frontline?

And can you tell us all where we can buy it cheaply? This would help a lot of the readers.

Removing Ticks from a Dog can be straightforward but getting some Frontline, discount or otherwise will help stop Ticks in the first place. How to remove Ticks from a Dog is, as you can see , not that difficult as long as you are not too squeamsih.

[ad#ad-1]
Regular brushing of your Dog is a very important but often overlooked aspect of looking after Dogs. All too often many of us (me included) neglect this simple but very important task.

How to groom Dogs fur is a fairly basic but still underrated part of a basic Dog Care routine. Hopefully their teeth will be in order by supplying regular Raw Meaty Bones or brushing their teeth once a week or more often with a Dog Toothpaste There is an All Natural Toothpaste for Dogs that is available for only a few dollars. You should be clipping their nails and checking their ears regularly as well.

But for some reason many of us do not brush our Dog as regularly as we should. There are many advantages to brushing your Dog regularly apart from the obvious.

Brushing helps distribute the natural Oils in your Dogs fur.

Brushing gives you a perfect chance to check your Dogs condition.

You will quickly discover any matted hair that may need to be cut out.

Regular brushing means you can check for ticks and fleas and halt the problem before it may become serious.

As Dogs age they are more and more prone to lumps and bumps on their body. Most are simply fatty deposits but they need to be checked out by your Vet.

Obviously the main advantage for homeowners is that regular brushing cuts down on the unbelievable amount of Dog Hair that can build up around the home, especially if your Dog is molting.

Also once you know how to groom Dogs fur properly you will have a fantastic, knot free, super charmer of a Dog!

How To Groom Dogs Coats

Brushing your Dog is a fairly simple exercise but their are a few things to bear in mind. Amazingly there is conflicting advice even for such a basic task. Some professionals advise first to brush in the opposite direction to the direction the hair grows. I have never found this to work well so my recommendations are as follows.

Always start at the head and brush in the direction that the coat naturally grows.

Ensure that you get right to the base of the coat, using your fingers if necessary to part the hair and do a section at a time. Especially important in long haired Dogs.

Get a good firm grip on your Dog. Hold on to the collar or put your fur bundle on the lead. I prefer to hold on to the collar, it is easier to keep the wiggle bottoms in one place.

Do it regularly. When you first have your Dog do it every day. This way your Dog will get used to grooming much quicker. If you don’t do it often enough your Dog may always be adverse to being groomed.

Don’t treat it as a game. Don’t treat the brush as a toy or your Dog will always be trying to grab the brush to play with it.

Be gentle. If you are too rough then you will put your Dog off being groomed. You don’t hack at your own hair if you encounter a tangle or knot. Act accordingly with your own Dog.

How Often To Groom Your Dogs Coat

This really is dictated by the Breed of Dog, your Dogs activities and the length of the coat.

[ad#ad-inpost]

Long haired Dogs need to be brushed more regularly than short haired Dogs. At least once a week for Dogs with long hair, although I have found it needs to be more regular than that. Long hair gets matted very easily and if your Dog is frequently rolling about and playing outside then more regular brushing is needed.

Short haired Dogs don’t need brushing as regularly unless they are molting. Even then many recommend a Dog Glove over brushing, a Slicker Brush is also a nice gentle way to brush your Dogs fur.
These are great for collecting all that Dog fur that would otherwise have been spread all over the house. I would still brush a short haired Dog at least once a week just so they do not become unfamiliar with the act of being brushed.

Personally now I have got in to a more strict routine, I like to brush the Dogs most days now. Just a quick brush so they stay familiar with the act and apart from anything else it has dramatically cut down on the fur around the house.

Obviously, though, whatever you do, as soon as your Dog has been brushed it will always try to find a way to get as dirty and tangled as quickly as possible!

Comes with the territory I guess!

May the Doggie Force be with you all,
